Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, a resume is one of the most crucial documents in the job search process. It makes hiring managers more receptive to you. Whether they give you a chance, your resume will be the decisive factor. This document will often be a one- or two-pager highlighting all your roles, including your present role, educational background, abilities, and attributes that will help hiring managers understand why you are the ideal candidate for the position.

What should you include in your resume to ensure that employers will notice it? Let's take a closer look!

Start With the Right Format

Before you type out your resume, think of the format you want your resume to be in. There are three most used resume formats: chronological, functional, or combination.

A chronological resume emphasises your professional or career history. This resume is ideal for people with a stable job history, consistent advancement, and no breaks in employment.

A functional resume emphasises skills. This resume format is ideal for people seeking jobs focusing on skills rather than work history.

A combination resume emphasises both abilities and professional experience. Anyone can utilise this resume, which benefits those wishing to change careers.

List Your Contact Details

Always include your contact information at the top of your resume. Including your contact information in the top section will make it easier for recruiters to contact you. The elements you should include in your contact information are:

Your full name

Phone number

Email Address (Be sure to use a professional email address!)

You can also include links to your social media portfolios, such as Behance for graphic designers and Clippings.me for content writers.

List your work Experiences and Achievements

To make your work experience section stand out:

  • List the relevant roles you have held during your career.

  • Write your responsibilities for each job title that reflect the job and the skills and experience you gained while working there.

  • List all your accomplishments in these roles.

So, here's an example of what and how to include your current and past work experiences in your resume:

Name of the company

Your Position

Work Duration

A list of your responsibilities and achievements

Example:

Company XYZ

Content Writer

June 2018 – July 2021

• Maintained website and blog content to increase site views by 25% in one month.

• Assessed the trending words online and delivered fresh material each time.

• Proofread more than 800+ texts and ensured they were error-free

Include Your Education Background

This section is usually of lesser significance if you are a seasoned professional. However, if you need more professional working experience, showcase your educational background (from most current to oldest qualifications!). You can also include any relevant coursework on your resume if it relates to the position you are applying for.

This is an example of the education section of the resume for a recent fresh graduate applying for the position of Content Writer:

University ABC

Bachelor of Human Sciences, English Linguistics

January 2014 – January 2018

GPA: 3.76

Relevant courses: Creative Writing, Introduction to Expository Writing

Let's move on to the last part, Skills!

Knowing what skills employers seek in their preferred employees is essential for job searchers. Knowing this might help you create your resume to showcase all the vital skills in your resume. Including these skills can help you establish your suitability for the job. Avoid using jargon that has little to no meaning. Hiring managers want to hear what skills you possess and how you will use those skills to flourish in the roles.
