How to Answer Why Should We Hire You Question

Candidates, especially fresh graduates, often find the 'Why should we hire you?' question quite intimidating. But fret not; with practice and suitable approaches, it can be simple to tackle this question. Take your time to craft your answer carefully before heading to your interview. When preparing your answer to this question, consider taking the following steps to craft your response perfectly.

Review the Job Description and Company

Reviewing the job description and the company provides valuable insights for candidates. Understanding the desired qualifications, work experience, and skills outlined in the job description allows you to highlight your strengths effectively. This knowledge helps set you apart from other candidates.

Studying the company gives you an advantage over other candidates.  By highlighting your commitment to understanding the company's needs, you position yourself as a candidate ready to contribute to its success. Companies appreciate applicants who align with their goals, making your preparation a key factor in standing out during the interview.

List Down Your Skills

After reviewing the job description and company background, start outlining your skills in connection with the role. Once you have identified your skills, you can easily answer the question of why they should hire you. Remember that if you are selected, you will need to use these skills in your job, so only include the ones you have!

Our previous article highlighted some of the most important transferable skills for job seekers. Companies highly value these skills, and they will help you quickly adapt to a new career.

Include Quantifiable Examples

After listing your skills, ensure you can back up your claims with evidence. Describe how you have used these skills to excel in your job. If you are a fresh graduate, you can give examples of how you used these skills in any project you were involved in as a student.

Here's an example of how you can answer this question as a seasoned professional:

Sales Manager Role:

" You should hire me because you mentioned needing someone with effective communication skills and managerial expertise. In my previous role, I supervised a team of five sales executives, two of whom were new to sales. I provided guidance and support, leading them to exceed monthly sales goals. With seven years of experience as a sales manager in both B2B and B2C retail, I have developed strong communication skills by addressing client inquiries and concerns. Hiring me ensures a dedicated employee committed to continuous self-improvement and determined to elevate the company to new heights.”

Here's an example of how you can answer this question as a fresh graduate:

Marketing Executive Role:

As the head of marketing for my faculty's student organisation, I gained valuable marketing skills during my time at the university. I managed a team of four individuals and worked on digital and social media marketing and content writing whenever the institution held an event. The events drew many students and were a big success. I am ready to learn more to advance in marketing, and my experience qualifies me for this role.”

Practise Your Answer

Finally, now that you have gone through the previous steps start carefully crafting and practising your response. You can conduct mock interviews in front of a mirror by yourself or with friends or family. This is an excellent method for getting comfortable and preparing for the interview!
