School Counselor Job Description


Job Title: School Counselor


Job Summary:

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced School Counselor to provide counselling and support services to students in our school. The School Counselor will be responsible for helping students to develop academic and social skills, manage emotional and behavioural issues, and prepare for college and career success.




     Provide individual and group counselling services to students, addressing academic, social, and emotional issues

     Develop and implement counselling and prevention programs to promote healthy behaviours and positive mental health

     Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success and academic achievement

     Conduct assessments of students' academic and emotional needs, and develop individualized plans to address those needs

     Assist students with college and career planning, including advising on course selection, college applications, and financial aid

     Participate in the development and implementation of behaviour management and intervention plans for students with special needs or behavioural challenges

     Maintain accurate and confidential student records, and comply with all legal and ethical guidelines regarding student privacy and confidentiality

     Stay up-to-date on best practices and research in counselling and student support services

     Participate in school-wide activities and events, and collaborate with other school personnel to promote a positive school culture and environment




     Master's degree in school counselling or a related field

     State certification or licensure as a school counsellor

     3-5 years of experience in school counselling, preferably in a K-12 setting

     Knowledge of counselling theory and practice, as well as federal, state, and local regulations governing student support services

     Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school personnel

     Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities

     Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all aspects of the job, and to promoting a safe and inclusive school environment.
